After 46 years of crosswalk closure, the iconic Winnipeg intersection takes a new lease on life as Portage and Main reopens for pedestrian walkways. To celebrate and commemorate its reopening Petal Design and Storefront Manitoba have partnered with the Exchange Biz to highlight the importance of the occasion. The idea for Crossroads is to explore both the connection and passage that this iconic intersection has presently, with the intention of provoking pedestrians to think about what these portals may represent, guiding them into various quadrants of the city. Each portal has unique etchings that stand as tributes to specific elements that shape our physical surroundings.

The Torch Portal embodies fire. A symbolic representation of spirit and resilience, honoring the people who have called this place home for millennia.

The Shore Portal speaks of earth. Portage and Main create a passage way, a reflection of its situation along Manitoba’s rivers: the Red, Assiniboine, and Seine Rivers that cut through the region.

The Pond Portal symbolizes water. Manitoba is known for its many quiet lakes and flowing river that weave in and round the land, feeding and sheltering the many creatures that call this place home.

The Sky Portal is reflective of air. Evoking the sea of stars that stretch over the vast and beautiful prairie night sky.
